The Election Commission of India (ECI) is an autonomous constitutional body responsible for administering and conducting free and fair elections in the country. It works independently, free from the influence of the government, to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
The ECI is headed by a Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners. The Chief Election Commissioner is appointed by the President of India, and the Election Commissioners are also appointed by the President. The Commission is responsible for preparing and revising the electoral rolls, delimiting and readjusting the parliamentary and assembly constituencies, and making recommendations on electoral reforms.
The ECI also has a Secretariat that assists the Commission in its functions. The Secretariat is headed by a Secretary, who is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Commission. The ECI also has a Director General of Police, who is responsible for the security arrangements during elections. The Commission has a robust framework in place to ensure the smooth conduct of elections and to address any issues that may arise during the electoral process.
