Mahesh Babu is set to star in the upcoming Indian film Varanasi, directed by S. S. Rajamouli. In this film, he plays a dual role as Rudhra and Lord Rama. The narrative revolves around the adventures of Rudhra as the city of Varanasi faces the threat of an asteroid, with the story spanning multiple timelines and yugas.
The film is notable not only for its ambitious plot but also for its significant budget of ₹1,400 crore, making it one of the most expensive Indian films ever produced. Varanasi is scheduled for release on April 7, 2027, coinciding with the festival of Ugadi.
Initial discussions for this collaboration between Mahesh Babu and Rajamouli began in 2010, but the project only materialized after the completion of Rajamouli’s previous film, RRR, in 2022. The film’s production began in early 2025, with extensive filming taking place in locations such as Hyderabad, Odisha, and even Antarctica, marking a significant milestone in Indian cinema.
Alongside Mahesh Babu, the film features Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran in pivotal roles. The film aims to blend Indian cultural themes with a globetrotting adventure style, reminiscent of classic adventure films.
